A series of affordable housing thoughts and ideas by Perth’s leading architects

As President of the WA Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, in 2022 I established an Affordable Housing Taskforce comprised of architects actively engaged in delivering affordable housing in Western Australia.

One of the recent projects of this group, chaired by “My Home” architect Michelle Blakeley, is the creation of a series of affordable housing thoughts and ideas by Perth’s leading architects.

The first piece was written by Matt Delroy Carr talking about how affordable housing can also be great for the planet. Matt’s own home is the first certified #TrueNetZero house in Western Australia, and the third of its kind nationally.

You can read Matt’s story via link here.

The next piece was by Trent Woods from Officer Woods Architects. Trent talks about the importance of garden. The dilemma we find ourselves in is that houses are getting larger and blocks of land are getting smaller.

You can read Trent’s story via link here.

The series continues this week with Michelle Blakeley. Michelle highlights that Australian homes are the largest of any country in the world. If we want to make houses more affordable we need to reduce their size.

Thank you Henry Thai at The Property Tribune for publishing, and Michelle Blakeley and Amber Sheldon for putting this series together.
